Love

When Lucia was six, she swam up to the surface of the ocean. There, she saw a cruise ship. She got spellbound by the fireworks display and eventually started singing. A young boy heard her voice and asked who was she and how she's able to be in the water. She reveals that she's a mermaid, surprising the boy greatly. Suddenly, the ship tilted and the boy fell into the ocean. Lucia managed to take the boy to dry land; however, he was still unconscious. With that, she gave him her pearl and left after he woke up.

Seven years later, Lucia came back to the human land to find the pearl she had given him. While she was talking a morning stroll around the area, she met a surfer by the name of Doumoto Kaito. While he looked like her childhood love, his personality was far more flamboyant and flirty. One event led to another, and Lucia found out that Kaito is indeed the boy she met when she was a child as he still had her pearl with him. On top of that, Kaito's only love is the mermaid which he met seven years ago.

One would think Lucia could confront him directly, though that really wouldn’t work. If Lucia tells him that she's a mermaid, she will turn into foam. Lucia then decided to make Kaito figure out that she's the mermaid he's in love with. Eventually after Lucia's attempt(s) to gets Kaito to fall in love, she wins his love. At first, he still thinks human Lucia and mermaid Lucia are two different people. This leads him into a lot of confusion, but he figures out that they are the same person towards the end of the first season. To describe their relationship, it's a rather "cute" one you'd expect from the magical girl genre. Kaito tends to tease Lucia and give a couple quirks. Lucia gets a bit frustrated at his antics, but she knows that he doesn't mean harm.

In PURE, Lucia and Kaito's relationship is given a huge trial. In an encounter from Mikeru, Kaito loses his memory and is swept to the Hawaiian shore. A young girl named Mikaru finds him and takes him to her home. Because of her older brother, Mikaru and Kaito go to Japan. It is here where Lucia finally finds Kaito. Lucia's heart is broken when she sees that Kaito has not only lost his memory, but seems to like Mikaru. Lucia and Kaito are eventually reunited, but a new battle arises from it.
