Pink Pearl

In-Depth

Lucia is the main character of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. The series introduces her as the mermaid princess of the North Pacific Ocean. In the vain of The Little Mermaid, our lovely mermaid princess becomes acquainted with the land world because of love. When Lucia was six, she had fallen in love with a human boy on a ship she spotted out in the ocean. On that night, an accident occurred on that ship, and the boy could have met his death within the sea. However, the boy did not drown as Lucia managed to save him and take him to the safety of dry land. In addition, she had given up her pearl to him, in hopes of saving his life (which obviously worked - otherwise this show would not exist). Seven years later, Lucia came back the world of dry land in order to retrieve her precious pearl, marking the start of the series.

While on human land, Lucia resides at the Pearl Piarre Hotel, a hotel maintained by Nikora, Lucia's self-proclaimed "older sister" (though she is actually an inhabitant of Lucia's kingdom). Hippo, Lucia's guardian, and Taki, a fortune teller from the North Pacific Ocean kingdom, also stay at this hotel. Because of Lucia's hardworking personality (and Nikora's nagging), Lucia often finds herself running chores at the hotel, such as vacuuming the rooms or attending the front desk. In addition, Lucia attends a local junior high school with Hanon and Rina, the Aqua and Green Pearl princesses, respectively.

Lucia is not only a mermaid princess. With the Pink Pearl, Lucia can transform to her alter-ego, Pink Pearl Voice. As Pink Pearl Voice, she can weaken her enemies with a song and dance performance. Her transformation phrase in the TV series is Pink Pearl Voice! and her main offensive attack is Love Shower Pitch!. In some parts of the series, Lucia and the gang obtain new songs and one power-up. The songs that are granted exclusively to Lucia (in other words, the songs that are considered to be her image songs) are Splash Dream and MOTHER SYMPHONY.

Personality-wise, Lucia does not stray much from the magical girl leader archetype. Lucia is a kind, bubbly, and simple-minded person. Her outgoing and optimistic personality aid her in being able to befriend just about anyone with ease. She is very attached to her friends and loved ones and could go to just about any extent to keep them safe and happy. Lucia, as many protagonists in the magical girl genre, is clumsy, naïve, and slightly ditzy. She easily messes up small tasks, and she might jump into a situation without thinking of its repercussions. Because of her impulsiveness, Lucia often gets reeled into unnecessarily difficult problems. Nonetheless, her bravery, determination and willpower guide her to sound solutions and, at the end of the day, makes an excellent leader.

Lucia might not be the brightest crayon in the box, but she is far from stupid or dimwitted. Time and time shows that Lucia is a very determined person who will obtain/master anything she puts her mind to. For example, Lucia was not always good at cooking, but she eventually learned how to make good meals. In addition, she is a relatively creative and versatile character, showing mastery in making crafts from bead kits and having a good singing voice (though she is known to have a terrible singing voice in her human form).
