Blood Type

Blood types are determined by presence or absence of antigenic substances, which are glycoproteins (proteins with sugar residues), on the cell membrane of the red blood cells. These antigenic substances are, for the most part, inherited from the person's parents/genetic code. The two groupings used are ABO and Rh, where ABO is the traditional type system (A, B, O, AB) and Rh determining the presence of another antigen (thus the + and - aspect of blood type).

Lucia has type O blood, meaning her red blood cells lack the type A and type B antigens (she only has L-ribose on the membranes). While she can donate blood to people of all blood types, she can only accept type O blood because. If she is transfused with a blood type other than type O, her blood will agglutinate as she possesses both the Anti-A and Anti-B antibodies. Without the presence of medical care, she could definitely face death. Now, you think the villains of Pichi Pichi Pitch would have known some basic science, neh?

Outside of medical implications, the Japanese tend to associate people's blood type with personality traits. To them, one's blood type dictates a person's general characteristics. It is almost synonymous to Western star signs and Chinese astrology, although I cannot comment on its accuracy or how serious blood types are taken in Japan. With this in mind, I have compiled a few descriptions of the type O blood group.

Type O (The Warrior): trendsetters, loyal, passionate, self-confident, independent, ambitious, vain, jealous.
- Japan Vistor

People with blood type O people are outgoing, energetic and social. They are the most flexible of the blood types. They easily start up projects but often have trouble following through because they give up easily. They are flighty and not too dependable. O types always say what's on their mind. They value the opinion of others and like to be the center of attention. Also, people with O blood are extremely self-confident.
- Issendai's Lair

Type O's are outgoing, and very social. They are initiators, although they don't always finish what they start. Creative and popular, they love to be the center of attention and appear very self confident
- Bella Online

The descriptions above definitely show that Lucia's blood type suits her. Being the main heroine in this magical girl series, she is a bubbly, social, and highly energetic person. She shows many positive qualities a leader requires as well, such as ambition, willpower, and unyielding loyalty to her allies. While she can get flustered when things are not going her way, she still manages to continue being the strong-willed person she is (ignoring PURE, of course).

Although Lucia does not have an inferiority complex, I would say she possesses the right amount of confidence. The earlier episodes in Pichi Pichi Pitch about Kaito could be brought out as an argument; however, her uncertainties and insecurities never really became a huge obstacle.
